The "Worthy" Poor

I was helping "Maria" to apply online for a job.

She had a good job history, she was eager and presentable. Maria was just the kind of person I would want to serve me in the low-wage position she was seeking.

There were just a couple problems that prevented her from completing the form: she didn't have a fixed address or a phone number. Maria was homeless and destitute.

I stood there wondering how the employer would reach Maria with the news she had a job. How would they call her in for an extra shift?

A small, but loud segment of this country vilifies this woman. They tar Maria with the same brush as extreme examples like a surfer dude in California who lives on food stamps.

There is outrage that a federal program gives people like Maria basic cell phones so they can work.
